Centralized Hub for 8,000+ Communicators
Using UX to shape internal collaboration tools
Across the ELCA, a wide range of communicators—from synod staff to digital content creators—often work in silos despite having similar goals and challenges. This project explored how we might better support them through shared tools, content, and spaces to collaborate across the church ecosystem.

✨ My Role Brought in as the UX research lead on the Innovation team, I guided foundational discovery efforts for a potential “Communicators Collaborative”—an internal platform to support resourcing and relationship-building across ELCA communicators. We used a two-phase approach: - A quantitative survey (370+ responses) to map out communication workflows, pain points, and platform desires - Concept testing through 1:1 interviews, card sorts, and tree tests to validate early prototypes and content structures 💡 What We Learned - High interest, low clarity: People wanted this platform—but weren’t sure who it was for or how it differed from existing channels. Language and positioning mattered. - Information overload is real: Communicators struggled to sift through newsletters and resource libraries. They craved easier discovery, skimming, and filtering. - User needs vary by role: Synod staff, congregation tech leads, and content creators all approached communication differently—making it clear a one-size-fits-all tool wouldn't suffice. - Top feature asks? Search, sharing, and social connection.
🎯 Impact - Aligned the cross-functional team around what the tool is and who it’s for - Identified the most valuable features to build first—saving resources and avoiding feature creep - Clarified naming, onboarding, and content organization early on 📣 Stakeholder Feedback “The findings from the survey and 1-on-1 sessions validated a lot of our hypotheses and provided some invaluable (additional) insights. – External CX agency team (partnering with us on concept development)* “We’re pleased with how the research was incorporated in the development of the features of the tool.” – ELCA Strategic Communications Leadership Our synthesis directly shaped the final concept statement, core value propositions, and priority features for the platform—ensuring the design team had high-confidence direction before development began.
